We deliver the New Zealand Curriculum and, as an IBPYP (International Baccalaureate Primary Years Programme) fully Authorised IB World School,  we use the PYP framework to support our learners by taking in-depth inquiry into authentic units through a transdisciplinary lens.

Concept-based learning

Concept-based learning is driven by “big ideas” rather than subject-specific content. By leading students to consider the context in which they will use their understanding, concept-based learning brings “real world” meaning to content knowledge and skills.

An example is, rather than learning about dinosaurs for a term, we look at the big idea (concept) which is extinction. Dinosaurs are one example, but students are encouraged to think about what interests them and inquire into that. Languages, cultures, civilisations, money systems, plants and animals are all areas through which extinction can be further studied.

We inquire into concepts with rich units of learning under each of the six transdisciplinary themes. Our Year 1 students only look at four of these themes. Within these themes, each year level plans a unit of learning that uncovers particular concepts.
